Saltburn-by-the-Sea Local Historians
Tony and Cath
The team visited Tony and Cath, lifetime residents of Saltburn-by-the-Sea. This was an incredible experience sitting down with those who have lived in Saltburn all their lives. They were referred to us by several points of contact within Saltburn so we were pleased to finally meet them. Tony shared incredible stories about his life in Saltburn as well as schooled the team about the Middlesbrough Train Station, whose barrel vaulted roof had been destroyed by a German bomber in 1942 during the second world war.
Tony and Cath were able to provide outstanding photography of the Zetland Hotel - some of the original interior corridors and public rooms from 1863. Some of the most remarkable were taken just before the conversion of the Zetland from a hotel to the present day residences. They were even able to provide photos of the Saltburn Subway, which has eluded the team for sometime.
They have graciously made themselves available to the team however they have requested that the photographic resources we use be kept confidential for now so publishing the photos on the internet will be reserved for a later date once we are further along with the project.
